On March 7th 2020, the Howe Sound/Átl’ka7tsem Marine Reference Guide held a workshop at the Totem Hall, in Squamish BC with support from the Georgia Straight Alliance and the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society.

The workshop’s purpose was to bring together Squamish Nation community members, introduce what the stewardship network can become and identify community members that are interested in carrying the next steps forward together. Our three workshop objectives were:

1. Attendees have an improved understanding of Guardian Watchmen programs

2. Attendees express their ideas and thoughts on an Indigenous-led stewardship network or Guardian program in Howe Sound/Átl’ka7tsem

3. Sense of place, community, and stewardship are strengthened

We are so grateful to the 20 community members who participated and shared their perspectives and feedback on the development of an Indigenous-led stewardship network that would protect and care for the lands and waters that flow into Átl’ka7tsem.
