BC Parks is currently seeking input on the Howe Sound Crest Trail, a popular hiking trail in Cypress Provincial Park. This trail is within the watershed of Átl'ḵa7tsem/Howe Sound, and has seen substantial increases in the number of trail users in recent years.

They want to know how you use the Howe Sound Crest Trail, your perspectives on the trail, and your ideas for the future.

Your responses will help shape the Recreation Facility Plan for this study area, which includes the main 29km trail from Cypress Bowl to a trailhead south of Porteau Cove and four trails that connect with the main trail: Brunswick Mountain, Mt. Harvey, Binkert Trail (The Lions), and Mount Unnecessary.

Marine debris is a pressing issue in Átl'ḵa7tse

Marine debris is a pressing issue in Átl'ḵa7tsem/Howe Sound.

Each winter, large storms pass through our region, often knocking loose docks, vessels, and other large infrastructure in/near the water. This debris gets broken apart and moved around the Sound, sometimes causing damage as it does so.

When the weather calms in the spring and summer, we see a resurgence of clean-up efforts, often led by passionate community members. Clean-ups can be costly, and we want to provide support to these efforts.

Help us by donating to the Marine Debris Fund, which supports community-led removals of medium-sized debris from the Sound, when alternative funding routes and cleanup/salvage options fall short. Managed by @howesoundbiosphere, the Marine Debris Fund will help to cover costs incurred as a result of these clean-ups, such as disposal fees and gas costs.

The Marine Debris Fund is featured in @westvanfdn 's 2023 Give Where You Live campaign. That means your donation will be worth DOUBLE up to the $10,000 goal!

We're thrilled to share the 2023 Átl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound Slhawt’/Herring Survey Report!

Slhawt’/herring not only support the local food web, but are also a culturally significant fish to the Skwxwú7mesh. Since 2021, MSI has been partnering with the Squamish Nation, Squamish Streamkeepers, John Buchanan, and many others to conduct annual surveys and share the stories of slhawt’/herring spawn in Átl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound.

This report summarizes stories and data from our 2023 survey season. This project could not have been completed without the generous support from our volunteers, staff, contractors, partners, and funders - thank you to all who were involved 💙

Highlights include:
* Slhawt’ spawn season in Átl'ka7tsem was documented to span from February 26 to April 7, 2023
* 14 locations were consistently surveyed: 7 land-based sites and 7 ocean/boat-based sites
* 724 hours spent searching for slhawt’ over 181 surveys
* Over 20 volunteers contributed their time to land-based surveys
* 2 Squamish Nation Archaeological, Cultural, Environment (ACE) Technicians and Addison Farr of Sea Dog Expeditions were contracted to help with boat-based surveys
* Observations of wildlife who feast during Tem Lhawt’ included: eagles, sea lions, seagulls, orcas, humpacks
* Students from St’a7mes School marked the return of the herring with a large community celebration

Last week, we had the privilege of connecting with fellow Dungeness crab light trap coordinators at the @hakaiinstitute . It was a fantastic opportunity to share our successes and challenges, celebrate the end of another season, and learn from each other!

We're so grateful to be part of the Light Trap Network that includes 37 organizations throughout the southern coast of BC 🌊!

🦀 Dungeness crab light traps monitor the arrival and distribution of baby crabs and can provide insight into the number of adult crabs we can expect in the future🦀.

As we wrap up this season, we extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all our amazing volunteers 💙. They are the heartbeat of our work and we couldn't be more grateful for the dedication and time they put into this project!

Our Marine Debris Coordinator, Rebecca McDonald, recently participated in a two-day cleanup effort targeting debris hotspots in Átl’ḵa7tsem/Howe Sound 🌊

Organized by Krysta LaLiberte, from the Nicholas Sontag Marine Education Centre (NSMEC) in Gibsons, this important work was made possible thanks to the support of Freedom Diving Systems Ltd. and the Ocean Legacy Foundation 🐳

We want to thank NSMEC, Freedom Diving Services Ltd and Ocean Legacy for their partnership in this effort and we can't wait to see the final numbers for the total volume of debris removed from our shorelines this fall!

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day is observed on September 30th each year. This is a time to learn and reflect on the intergenerational trauma that residential schools have inflicted on Indigenous Peoples over the past century and continue to do so today.

It is a time to remember and honour the children who never made it home and the survivors of residential schools.
